Middle School Night December 7

We are having a Middle School Parent Night on Thurs. Dec. 7 at 6:30 in the playroom. 10 schools were invited to set up displays and speak to our parents about middle schools. The schools that will attend are White Station, Colonial, Snowden, Ridgeway, St. Anne's, St. Agnes/St. Dominic, Collegiate, Woodland, St. Mary's and Holy Rosary. Fourth grade is invited in case you want to start planning for the future now.

Multiplication Facts

At this point in fourth grade, students should be fluent on all of their facts through 12.

This means they should be able to recall all of the facts quickly and accurately. However, some students are not taking this seriously, and, therefore, after Christmas break, any student who has not passed level 10 on our timed tests, will be required to stay in for half of their recess, studying their facts, until they pass level 10.

This gives them one more month to master these facts. Anytime you are in the car, spend a few minutes calling out facts (especially 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12). If you have an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, there are numerous free multiplication/flash card apps. Download those, and have your child play them for a certain amount of time each day. Thank you for your support.

Level one: 0, 5, 10

Level two: 1, 2, 3
Level three: 2,3, 9
Level four: 3, 4, 9
Level five: 4,5,6
Level six: 6,7,9
Level seven: 4,7,8, and 9

Each test has 30 problems with 2 minutes to do them in.

Uniform Policy

 Across the district, Memphis City Schools is restating its commitment to enforcing the uniform policy. In accordance with the policy, the following uniform code will be enforced at Campus School:


• The uniform is tan, navy blue, or black pants, skirt, or jumper and a white, gray or navy blue long or short sleeve shirt with a collar (polo style, dress style, or turtleneck). A student can wear any combination of the colors. A t-shirt worn as an undershirt must be solid white or match the color of the shirt being worn.

• Pants must be straight legged or boot cut. Full-length pants, cropped pants, cargo pants, and straight legged capri pants are permitted. Denim jeans, pedal pushers, and bell bottoms are not permitted.

• Walking shorts are permitted and must come to the knee.

• Pants must fit at the waist and not be oversized or undersized (e.g. baggy pants, sagging pants, tights, pants made of spandex are prohibited). If belts are worn, they must be fitted and through belt loops.

• Skirts or jumpers must be at or below the knees.

• Shirts must be tucked in unless they are made to be worn over the pants or skirts.

• Light jackets, vests, shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, and cardigans are permitted as items that may be worn over the uniform tops. They must be white, tan, navy blue, black or gray. No ponchos are to be worn. Leggings must be solid gray, black, navy or white.

• No denim material may be worn as uniform clothing.

• All uniform clothing must be plain without any manufacturer’s logos, brand names, pictures, or insignias visible on the clothing with the exception of the Campus School logo.

• Shoes can have heels no higher than one and one-half inches. Athletic shoes, sandals with straps on the heel, and boots are permitted.

• Heavy coats, heavy jackets, and raincoats are not covered by these regulations and are not to be worn during the school day unless permitted by the principal for special circumstances.

• Principals shall have the authority to determine proper attire for their schools.
If you are in need of assistance in obtaining clothing complying with the uniform policy, please contact Cathy Bailey at 678-4037. Also, if you have clothing that complies with the policy that is in good condition, we would appreciate your donation.

The uniform policy is implemented with the intent of providing an atmosphere of safety, discipline, and school unity. Learn how to have FUN with Math and Science!

What is Math and Science Night?
An hour filled with intergrating play into the math and science content areas. Students will have fun with math board games that were designed by the stduents, graphing activities, rotating science stations, logic games, art activities, and more!

Scholastic Book Orders

The new book orders went home today. They are due Friday, November 19.

 If you are purchasing any "secret" books for the holidays. Please let me know, so I don't send them home with your child. (Books make marvelous gifts!!!)

Field Trip

Thank you to all of the volunteers who came and made our field trip to Elmwood possible! It is greatly appreciated!

Please continue to look for lice. The earlier it is caught, the better.

Friday Folders are going home today. The grammar test (as a whole) was not impressive. We most certainly will continue to review the concepts and reassess. The main culprits were subject/predicates, direct objects, and prepositions.

The Think Show projects are amazing! Your support is recognized and valued.

Head Check

Please continue to monitor your child's hair for lice. Look through their hair at least twice a week. We have had another occurence in fourth grade, and we just want to make sure to catch any early.

Novel Study Books

In the second nine weeks, we will begin using the three novels that are on the Fourth Grade Supply list. Please be sure to purchase/obtain a copy for your child. The books are: Night Journeys by Avi, Explorers of North America by Christine Taylor-Butler, and Across the Lines by Carolyn Reeder (all are available on Amazon.com) Look for used copies.

Board Game Project (Think Show) Tips and Reminders

Some tips and reminders:

•  Tip: (Optional) Your child can use an old board game and cover or paint over it .(Then you already have the box, game, etc.)
• Your child will bring home their math books for guidance in making the problems. (If it does not make it in their bookbag, I will be doing the morning intersession, let me know, and I can put it in the office for you to grab.)
• The theme must be one of these things: (It cannot be a 'Genre Bingo' Book, which is a book your child read independently nor can it be a Read Aloud book (a book I read completely to them.)

Youth Chinese Test Deadline

The deadline for students applying for the Youth Chinese Test (YCT) is this Friday, October 8. Flyers were sent home last week. There are many students in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th at Campus School that are fully prepared to take the YCT I and/or YCT II test(s). Scholarships are available for the $10 testing fee, if needed. We can also assist students with sample tests and training/tutoring sessions if needed.

Awards Day

Awards day is next week on Thursday at 8:30. The parent coffee is 7:30-8:15. Dr. Jeff Warren, our school's representative on the Board of Education, will be visiting.

The March date will be rescheduled, as it is currently during our Spring Break. I will let you know as soon as I find out the new date. Thank you for your support!

Elmwood Field Trip

Free Field Trip...But Need Drivers!

Fourth grade is in a unique partnership with Brooks Museum of Art. The teachers travel to our school three times throughout the year, and we travel to the museum twice a year (all for the low cost of $0). However, we need your help. The first time we were scheduled to visit the museum was our fall break, so in the headache of trying to match up our schedule with theirs, the date October 8 is available. (The Friday before Fall Break). I can take 3 children in my car, but need 16 more accounted for. (Children of a parent may ride in front, if you allow it, but not other children.) Before I commit to this date, I need to know if this is even a possibility. I completely understand that this is such late notice.



(In addition, you will have to come to school to register for Volunteer 2 status as soon as possible--I think even by the end of this week. You must register on a Memphis City School computer.)


Please email me as soon as you know if you are available and willing.


(This isn't an all day trip. Our class needs to be at the museum by 10:30. The class ends at 12. If we have enough people, I was thinking we could have a picnic lunch near the museum, so we would be back at school by 12:45.)

Family Gathering-Word Smart

We have a change in the date of our Family Gathering (We will be doing the Vocabulary Parade again). It will be January 7, 2011!  I wanted to give you a heads up, because it may be easier to come up with a word as you and your child have conversations. For instance, if they come to you and ask what a word means because they heard it on TV or from someone else....ta da...You may just have your Vocabulary Parade Word!



Vocabulary Parade Description:
Each child learns a new word and depicts themselves as that word. It is a learning experience for themselves, plus any of their friends in the audience that remembers what they dressed as. In order to save valuable instructional time, I am asking the families to chose a word with your child (that they do not already know) and create a depiction (costume) of that word. In addition, your child must be able to say the word and give a short definition of it. However, if your child was in my class last year, they must pick a new word!



For example, a new word could be regal, and the child could dress as royalty. It can be as simple as just a crown. The 'costume' does not have to be elaborate. At school we will make the signs that have the new vocabulary words on them. It is usually easiest to choose an adjective, but feel free to choose anything.

Field Trip & Conferences

We will be heading to Elmwood Cemetary on November 3. We will leave school around 8:30 and return around 12:30, and we would love to have YOU as a chaperone/driver! (The permission slip will go home tomorrow.)

There is an important letter going home about the level of clearance our volunteers must have (a new MCS policy to ensure the safety of our students). Drivers on a field trip are considered Level 2, and HAVE to come into Campus School to register on a Memphis City School computer. You must register a two weeks prior to driving. Tomorrow, our library will be open from 8-9:30 to register, so if you are able, please complete the process then. (It takes about 5 minutes.) 

Please read the white letter that is going home today for more detailed information about the new policy.

In addition, we need a copy of your driver's license and current insurance card. (If you are new to Campus, we do not have buses, parents and teachers take our students to our field trip destinations.)

Picture Day!

Don't forget tomorrow is picture day. They do not have to wear uniforms, but their clothes still need to be appropriate for school. You MUST pre-pay for these pictures.

Grandparents day is tomorrow. I realize the notice is late, so we will be having a Grandparent's Tea at a later date.

Intersession Registration starts tomorrow. Be sure not to send the money in with your child. You must hand it to Ms. Coleman at the Registration table.

A few updates...

• The whole fourth grade will be making Native American crafts next week, and would be extremely grateful for any donations your family would be willing to make.

Next Thursday, August 12, is our "Meet the Teacher" night. It starts at 6 in our classroom, and I will be presenting our school and classroom expectations/procedures. Then at 6:45, we break for a CSPN meeting (our PTO). I hope to see you there!
