Event Details: In the Fall of 2014, professors Jenna Thompson and Jennifer Barker, both in the Department of Architecture, received an Engaged Learning Fellowship (ELF). The purpose of the ELF was to redesign the Fundamentals of Design Studio, a first year course in the Department of Architecture, by introducing community partners as part of the course. Currently, community engagement projects are incorporated in all design studio courses within the Department of Architecture from second year undergraduate up to and including both years of graduate studies. The first year studio has traditionally not included a community partner until the course redesign. For our first community partner, the Department connected with Clean Memphis and Campus School to help them achieve their Sustainable Schools Challenge (SSC) program goals. A second partnership was created with the Memphis and Shelby County Office of Sustainability to help them demonstrate public awareness about sustainability issues such as reusing and recycling. Under the direction of Pam Hurley and Jenna Thompson, the course activities and projects were designed to support the course redesign attributes.

Plastic Bottle Challenge! + Department of Architecture

 Fourth grade has partnered with the Department of Architecture at the University of Memphis to participate in an exciting opportunity!

The Department of Architecture reuses plastic bottles to create innovative designs. Fourth grade has been challenged to collect empty plastic bottles, and the college students/professors are going to turn our 'trash' into treasure! They will show the children the process, the designs in progress, the importance of recycling, and how their contributions matter. 

Additionally, they have invited all of you to their opening event downtown Wednesday, April 29 to show off their creations with our plastic!

The challenge: Can each of the three homeroom's collect at least 250 plastic bottles before Friday, April 24? (This can be former bottles of soda, water, milk, OJ, etc.) Please rinse out the bottles before turning in. 

Science Material Needs

During the week of May 4, we are going participate in a challenge and need the following materials:
Lots of empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls
10 rolls of masking tape

If you are willing to donate, please send the materials to Ms. Caldwell.

Chapter 8 Science Test (Electricity and Magnets) - Friday, April 10.

In class, Wednesday, April 8, your child will be working on a Chapter 8 Study Guide and will take it home to help guide studying. They may take their textbook home, but it is the child's responsibility to get the textbook. 

The test will be Friday, April 10.

*Some students have not returned textbooks from our last Science Tic Tac Toe assignment. Your child must find the book that was assigned to him/her.*

Book Fair Rescheduled

All Scholastic Book Fair events have been rescheduled for next week, Monday, February 23 through Thursday, February 26.  Specifically:

• All for Books change collection will go until Thursday evening.
• Children will shop Monday through Thursday, during their PE times.
• Family Night and Character Parade will be Thursday, February 26 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Pouncer and members of the U of M football team will be there as Guest Readers.
• Read-in will be Monday, February 23 from 8:10 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
• Bookmark contest winners will be announced Thursday, February 26.
• Volunteer slots have all been moved to reflect the new dates. Click here to sign up for a shift or move an existing shift you have signed up for

Chapter 6 Study Guide

The Chapter 6 study guide is due February 6. Your child must find the answers in his/her textbook and cite the page number (even if they already know the answer). All short answer questions must be in a complete sentence.

Two exceptions:
Number 17 on page 68 of the guide is optional.
On page 71 only, the critical thinking question does not need a page number.
